From the roaster

This lovely, fully-washed heirloom coffee is our first fresh-crop Ethiopian offering of 2020. This coffee is grown in the shade of pristine, old-growth forests and carefully cultivated using traditional methods. Nano Challa is a cooperative located in the Jimma region, with around 350 members.

The cup is filled with ripe peach, wildflower honey and apricot. This is a typical flavor profile of high-quality coffees from western Ethiopia; rich, jammy and with lots of syrupy sweetness.

Context

The Ethiopia Nano Challa, sourced by Case Coffee Roasters, represents the distinct profile of the Jimma region in Ethiopia. This lot is composed of Heirloom varietals, which are celebrated for their genetic diversity and complex cup profiles. As a washed coffee, the processing method emphasizes the inherent clarity and brightness of the bean, allowing the delicate notes of ripe peach, wildflower honey, and apricot to shine through.

When evaluating such coffees, enthusiasts often consult a flavor wheel to better identify the nuanced transitions between stone fruit acidity and floral sweetness. While washed coffees are generally recognized for their clean, tea-like elegance and vibrant acidity, the specific terroir of Jimma provides a unique foundation for these characteristics. This offering serves as a refined example of how traditional processing techniques can highlight the sophisticated, layered qualities found in high-quality Ethiopian heirloom crops.
