Grown in the Bena Bena Valley of Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands, Korofeigu Organic comes from the Korofeigu Farmer’s Cooperative Society, a community shaped by generations of Indigenous knowledge and outside influences.

Coffee was introduced to the region and was not initially seen as an important crop by local communities. Over time, it became an important part of the local economy and created new opportunities for farmers.

The cooperative was established to help producers achieve Organic certification and has since grown to support more farmers across the region. Members also have access to workshops covering farm training, personal health, and financial literacy, helping strengthen both their livelihoods and communities.

In the cup, Korofeigu Organic is clean and well-balanced, with notes of yellow plum, caramel, and black tea. Bright fruitiness meets gentle sweetness, followed by a delicate tea-like finish.

This coffee reflects the journey of a once-unfamiliar crop becoming an important part of the community and the farmers who grow it.

Context

Sourced from the Bena Bena Valley, the Papua New Guinea Korofeigu is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Korofeigu Farmer’s Cooperative Society. This lot features the Bourbon varietal, a plant historically celebrated for its balanced sweetness and complex acidity. Cultivated at elevations between 1400 and 1800 meters, the cherries undergo a washed process, a technique often employed to highlight the inherent clarity and clean profile of the bean.

Offered by PPP Coffee, this selection presents a nuanced cup profile characterized by notes of yellow plum, caramel, and black tea. When evaluating such profiles, enthusiasts often consult the flavor wheel to better identify the subtle interplay between fruit-forward acidity and deep, sugary undertones. While washed coffees are frequently prized for their bright, tea-like elegance, the specific terroir of the Bena Bena Valley provides a distinct regional character that distinguishes this offering within the broader landscape of Papua New Guinean coffee production.
