The Story

Nano Challa Cooperative formed in 2004 as a way for members to better process and market their harvest. In 2010, they were one of the first Ethiopian cooperatives to invest in a washing station, greatly improving the quality of their processed coffee. This raised them out of the commodity market and garnered specialty coffee prices for their harvest. In 2013, our roast of their washed lot won a Good Food Award.

Now boasting more than 700 members, Nano Challa has continued to invest in milling equipment, including a Penagos depulping machine that uses minimal water. Great care is taken in sorting the parchment, and the end result is a beautifully clean coffee with deep sweetness and great clarity.

Processing Notes

Farmers deliver cherries to the central washing station, where they are processed using the eco-pulper before overnight fermentation of 10-12 hours. Drying takes 10-11 days on raised beds, with the first few days spent under a shade while surface moisture dries away.

The Nano Challa Organic Washed is a standout selection from the Nano Challa Cooperative in the Jimma Zone of Ethiopia. Grown at 1975 masl, this coffee features the Ethiopian Heirloom varietal, which is widely celebrated for its genetic diversity and complex cup profiles.
