From the roaster

Ibonia Estate is located in Kiambu County, about 13 km north of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. The red volcanic soils on this estate are well-drained and mineral-rich. The climate is cool, with a colder and rainier period between May - July, resulting in a slower cherry development and longer maturation period. Processing begins with handpicked ripe red cherries, which are pulped on the same day of harvest. The coffee undergoes full fermentation, followed by washing, then is fully dried and stored in well ventilated bins.

This coffee has a beautiful structure defined by crisp green guava and apricot, with a lingering raw sugar sweetness.

Context

Ibonia Estate is a washed coffee from Kiambu, Kenya, produced on the estate itself. This lot showcases the distinctive characteristics of the SL28 varietal, which is prized for bright acidity and complex fruit expression. The roaster identifies green guava, apricot, and raw sugar sweetness—a profile that reflects both the varietal's natural tendency toward stone fruit notes and the terroir of Kenya's central highlands.

Grown at 1725 meters, this coffee benefits from the region's elevation and volcanic soils. The washed processing method emphasizes clarity, allowing the varietal's intrinsic flavors to come through without the heavier fruit characteristics typical of natural-processed coffees. This bean represents the estate-grown model, where producer control over harvest and processing offers consistency and traceability.
