ABOUT

Nyeri County is one of Kenya's most famous growing regions. The name Nyeri is derived from the Masaai word nyiro, meaning red, after the red volcanic soil in the area. Nyeri’s red volcanic soil is rich in organic matter and nutrients, making it an excellent region for growing coffee. Ichuga is one of 5 factories owned and operated by Kiama Farmer Cooperative Society (FCS).

Ichuga encapsulates everything we love about coffee from Nyeri. Fruit driven, vibrant and intense like nothing else you’ll find throughout the year. This particular selection is 'AA', which indicates the largest bean size available, and is often associated with high cup quality. We're roasting this exceptional lot for filter this year, to highlight vibrant acidity and unique character traits associated with the region.

Context

This Kenyan coffee from Nyeri comes from the Kiama Farmer Cooperative Society, roasted by Seven Seeds. The lot features the Batian varietal, a modern hybrid bred for disease resistance and cup quality, processed via the fully washed method—a technique that typically emphasizes clarity and brightness. The roaster identifies peach pie sweetness with vanilla and lime notes, suggesting a balanced profile with both stone fruit character and citric snap. At 1,700 meters, the altitude sits in Kenya's classic coffee-growing range, supporting the development of the fruit-forward characteristics typical of the region's washed coffees.
