The Story

Located in Uraga Woreda, in the northern part of Guji Zone, the 1,814 smallholder members of Layo Teraga Cooperative grow coffee in gardens around their homes in semi-forested environments at a staggeringly high elevation of over 2,300 meters.

Founded in 1976, the coop has enabled its smallholder members to make a living producing coffee in Guji, where coffee prices have historically been lower than the neighboring Gedeo or Sidama zones because of a lack of market access. Our friends at Crop to Cup have been importing from Layo Teraga since 2021.

Farmers deliver cherries to the central washing station, where they are pulped and undergo a single fermentation spanning 45 hours. Drying takes about 12 days on raised beds.

Context

The Layo Teraga Washed, sourced from the Guji Zone of Ethiopia, represents a meticulous approach to regional coffee production. Cultivated by the Layo Teraga Coffee Producers Coop at an elevation of 2342 masl, this lot features the 74110 varietal. As a washed coffee, it undergoes a rigorous cleaning process that typically highlights the inherent clarity and acidity of the bean, often resulting in the bright, tea-like profiles frequently associated with high-altitude Ethiopian harvests.

Roasted by PT's Coffee Roasting, this selection presents a delicate sensory profile characterized by notes of peach, black tea, and lemon. When evaluating such nuanced profiles, enthusiasts often consult a flavor wheel to better identify the subtle interplay between citrus acidity and stone fruit sweetness. By focusing on the specific characteristics of the 74110 varietal and the precision of the washed process, this coffee offers a refined expression of its Guji origins.
