From the roaster

250 grams of whole roasted coffee beans.

Kigari Teachers College is located near Embu town, which benefits from the high altitudes where they are located. They are also dedicated to other activities, besides coffee production, and all the activities are connected - they take advantage of farming activities to make compounds that will benefit coffee trees. In the college, they teach students about good farming practices and sustainability. They are very involved in agriculture, and own pigs and cows. This also enables them to teach their students right on the compound. Kigari uses the manure of the cows to produce organic fertilizer. They are very open-minded and want to promote young people in the coffee industry.

Context

Sourced from the Embu region of Kenya, the Kigari AA is produced by the Kigari Teachers College. This lot features the SL28 varietal, a plant selection historically celebrated for its distinct acidity and complex profile. As a washed coffee, the beans undergo a meticulous cleaning process that typically highlights the inherent clarity and brightness of the terroir. Roasted by Da Matteo, this specific offering presents vibrant notes of black currant and raspberries.

When exploring such profiles, enthusiasts often reference the flavor wheel to better identify the nuanced fruit characteristics common in high-quality East African coffees. While washed coffees are generally prized for their clean, crisp finish, the specific expression of these berries is a hallmark of the region's unique growing conditions. This selection serves as a refined example of the precision involved in Kenyan coffee production, balancing traditional processing with the distinct genetic traits of the SL28 plant.
