Volcan Azul Laurina: Naturally Low Caffeine Volcan Azul is located on the edge of the Poás Volcano, where coffee has been planted on fertile soil since the mid-19th century. Alejo Castro Kahle is a passionate grower who has performed consistently at the Cup of Excellence, with rare varietals and meticulous processing.

The Laurina varietal naturally contains less than half of the caffeine of a regular arabica bean. For those who are sensitive to caffeine or just want to enjoy more coffee in a day, this is a way to do so without compromising on body or flavour. Fruity, nutty, and smooth, this coffee offers a wonderful profile with high sweetness.

Context

The Laurina varietal, often celebrated for its naturally lower caffeine content, remains a rare and distinct botanical curiosity in the specialty coffee world. This specific lot, cultivated by Alejo Castro Kahle in the West Valley region of Costa Rica, showcases the unique profile of the Laurina plant. Grown at 1400-1500 masl and prepared using the washed process, the coffee is roasted by The Barn to highlight a profile described as fruity, nutty, and smooth.

While washed coffees are generally prized for their ability to emphasize the inherent clarity and acidity of the bean, the Laurina variety itself is frequently noted for its delicate, refined cup characteristics. To better understand how these specific attributes align with broader industry standards, one might consult the flavor wheel to map the interplay between the nuttiness and fruit-forward notes present in this particular harvest.
