Täällä kahvinviljely on koko perheen yhteinen asia.

This elegant coffee comes from Gedeb woreda in Southern Ethiopia, within the renowned Yirgacheffe coffee-growing region.

Here, coffee farming is a family affair. Multigenerational smallholders often cultivate garden plots of less than one hectare, growing coffee alongside crops such as avocados and papayas. The region’s high altitude and iron-rich, acidic soils provide ideal conditions for growing exceptional coffee.

Farmers largely rely on traditional cultivation methods, including mixed cropping and careful selection of ripe coffee cherries.

This coffee features the distinctive varieties 74110 and 74112, two selections developed by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) in 1974 for their resistance to fungal diseases. Today, both varieties are highly sought after for their unique cup qualities. Generally speaking, 74110 brings bright citrus notes and a tea-like structure, while 74112 contributes greater complexity and floral character.

The freshly picked cherries are delivered to the Banko Chelbesa processing station, where they are depulped on the same day to preserve freshness and quality. The coffee is then fermented in clean tanks to remove the remaining mucilage before being sun-dried on raised beds.

Once fully dried, the coffee is transported to a dry mill in Addis Ababa, where it is sorted, packed, and prepared for export.

Coffee farming and processing are deeply woven into everyday life and local identity across Ethiopia. This coffee reflects the strong connection between the land, the people, and Ethiopia’s long-standing coffee heritage.
